When I first looked at the first page of the Googlehttp:\/\/www.spezialis-translations.at\/ results for the keywords relevant to my strategy, I honestly wondered whether it was worth bothering with SEO at all. The top spots were dominated by big translation agencies, offering all language combinations and translations across a range of subject areas from medical to insurance and marketing. Would I, a highly specialised one-woman show with only one language pair, be able to make any inroads into their territory?<\/p>\n<p id=\"0c32\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Well, since my aim was not just to improve my website but also to learn about SEO, I decided to give it a shot anyway and see what happened.<\/p>\n<p id=\"feba\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Quite a bit, as it turns out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fd8e\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">One year later, and with several first-page rankings under my belt, I\u2019ve proven that the Goliaths aren\u2019t always running the show. If the Davids are smart enough, they can compete \u2014 and get ahead.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"c1a6\" class=\"my mz fw be na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni mk nj nk nl mo nm nn no ms np nq nr ns bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">2. Persistence pays off<\/h2>\n<p id=\"eaab\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc nt me mf mg nu mi mj mk nv mm mn mo nw mq mr ms nx mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">SEO isn\u2019t a film \u2014 it\u2019s more like a long-running soap opera. It goes on, and on, and on\u2026in much the same manner as C\u00e9line Dion\u2019s heart in the late 90s.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e4fc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It is a common misconception that, to be successful in SEO, all you have to do is make the necessary technical and structural changes to your website, write some content and that\u2019s it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8d1f\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Nothing could be further from the truth. Seeing results is SO motivating<\/h2>\n<p id=\"6975\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc nt me mf mg nu mi mj mk nv mm mn mo nw mq mr ms nx mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">As I\u2019ve mentioned, with SEO, you don\u2019t see results overnight. It takes several months even to see the first uptick in impressions and\/or clicks. Your website only builds up authority with Google slowly and you have to keep on feeding the beast of Silicon Valley reasons to take you seriously and allow you to rank better.<\/p>\n<p id=\"84f9\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">But once you see your traffic ticking upwards, it is the greatest motivation! Immediately, you feel spurred on to do more, be even better.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0c7b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It is quite addictive. In no time, you are officially an SEO nerd.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ed63\" class=\"my mz fw be na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni mk nj nk nl mo nm nn no ms np nq nr ns bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">5. Getting backlinks is really, really hard<\/h2>\n<p id=\"ad9c\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc nt me mf mg nu mi mj mk nv mm mn mo nw mq mr ms nx mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Backlinks, as the heart of offpage SEO, are a key factor in achieving good rankings. And yet it is devilishly difficult to obtain them. It takes a hell of a lot of creativity, promotion and outreach to get just one.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d6f3\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Buying backlinks is possible, but it\u2019s a risky business. Basically, it is against Google\u2019s guidelines and you could incur a penalty for doing it and undo all your hard work.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7dbc\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Even if you are going to go ahead and take that risk, you need to know where best to get those juicy backlinks, which ones are good investments and how to integrate them into your website naturally. That is a science all by itself.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"9d9f\" class=\"my mz fw be na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni mk nj nk nl mo nm nn no ms np nq nr ns bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">6. Don\u2019t get too caught up on the data<\/h2>\n<p id=\"2ecf\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc nt me mf mg nu mi mj mk nv mm mn mo nw mq mr ms nx mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Of course, a big part of putting together a good SEO strategy is to work out which keywords are going to work best with regard to your goals. Identifying those keywords is a matter of research and looking at the relevant search data. Analysing the results of your actions and how your website is performing with regard to the agreed KPIs is also \u2014 you guessed it! \u2014 a matter of data analysis.<\/p>\n<p id=\"daf2\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, constantly poring over the numbers and obsessing over what is happening on a week-to-week, or even day-to-day basis is going to result in a situation where you focus too much on the short-term gains and can\u2019t see the wood for the trees.<\/p>\n<p id=\"caf6\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In his book \u201c<a class=\"af ly\" href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3pZDBsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">The Value of SEO<\/a>\u201d, Andrew Holland even goes so far as suggesting doing \u201cblind SEO\u201d, i.e. doing SEO for a whole year\u00a0<em class=\"mx\">without\u00a0<\/em>looking at a single metric. This will encourage you to build the best and most relevant website for the users you wish to attract to it rather than focusing on just data and traffic. The one that answers the questions that users didn\u2019t even know they had.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d131\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Guess which strategy is going to earn you more points with Google when it is assessing which website offers the user the best possible answer to the relevant search enquiry? Exactly.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"b7e7\" class=\"my mz fw be na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni mk nj nk nl mo nm nn no ms np nq nr ns bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">8. Understanding search intent is key<\/h2>\n<p id=\"eee5\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc nt me mf mg nu mi mj mk nv mm mn mo nw mq mr ms nx mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Search intention means what the user is actually looking for when they type certain keywords or keyphrases into the Google search window.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c3f5\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This can be tricky to work out. Take the keyphrase \u201c<em class=\"mx\">translation laws<\/em>\u201d, for example. Users could be searching for a translator to translate certain laws. OR it could mean that the user is looking for existing translations of certain laws. From the keyphrase alone, it\u2019s impossible to tell with any certainty.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8285\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Be critical about search intent when researching keywords and creating your SEO strategy. Failing to do that analysis up front could mean amassing useless impressions and clicks later on, distorting the picture of how well you are really doing on the SEO front.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"7f9b\" class=\"my mz fw be na nb nc nd ne nf ng nh ni mk nj nk nl mo nm nn no ms np nq nr ns bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">9. But afterwards, you\u2019ll have a better idea of how approach SEO, what works\u2026and what doesn\u2019t! You\u2019ll also fully understand how SEO success can only come from long-term commitment to the discipline.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6e97\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph lz ma fw mb b mc md me mf mg mh mi mj mk ml mm mn mo mp mq mr ms mt mu mv mw fp bj\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Your website (or your clients\u2019 websites) can\u00a0<em class=\"mx\">always\u00a0<\/em>be better and more useful to the people it intends to serve.
